PLEASANT HILL, MAY 29, 2018 – Two event reported today show how thin the veneer of “The Will of the People” truly is in the supposed democracies of this world. It is not an issue reserved for major countries, it allows the participation of states like Missouri.
Italy has had a silent coup, where the votes cast are ignored because it is counter to the desires of the deep state – the entrenched bureaucrats and civil servants.
In Italy a populist movement called the Five Star Movement (M5S) won the highest number of votes in the March general election. Keep in mind that Italy has a cornucopia of political parties. While wining the most votes, they did not win a popular majority, so they decided to work together with “The League”. M5S is a populist movement started by a comedian that blends environmentalism (zero fossil fuels by 2050) with a hardline anti-immigration policy. The League is a more conventional right-wing nationalist part.
The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, blocked M5S and the League from carrying out the voters’ Will. Why? Because this coalition had selected Paolo Savona to be the next Minister of the Economy. The problem with Savona is that he believes Italy needs a “Plan B” to get out of the Euro – if – necessary.
Mattarella justified his decision because, as he said, “The uncertainty about our position in the Europe has alarmed Italian and foreign investors.”
So, let me rephrase the above quoting from my favorite liberal thinking source, Star Trek. The scene I’m thinking of is when Spok dies at the end of Wrath of Kahn – “The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.” This vision is of a liberal universe where each do the best they can and receive what they enough to meet their needs – a utopian socialist foundation.
Mattarella changed it around, the needs of the few (investors) outweigh the Will of the many (the voters).
It is sad to see that vulnerable in our society. The upcoming idealist population, that has insufficient experience with the inapplicability of a godly goal in a world of flawed mortals that have proven over millennia that you power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, will never see the socialism the idealist wish.
BUT WAIT….
If you think only foreign countries ignore the Will of the people, you need to think again. The governor of Missouri surrendered today. He gave up and resigned eighteen months into his term.
Let’s review a quick timeline:
November 8, 2016 – Eric Greitens is elected as Governor in Missouri.
February 23, 2018 – Charged by St. Louis Circuit Attorney, Kim Gardner, with Felony Invasion of Privacy. At the center of the complaint is a photograph allegedly taken without consent, of his lover. The charge sheet alleges the picture contained “full or partial nudity.” Further it alleges that he transmitted the image “in a manner that allowed access to that image via a computer.”
April 19, 2018 – Judge is St. Louis rejects the request to dismiss the charges against Eric Greitens
May 3, 2018 – Missouri House members consider impeachment
May 14, 2018 – (3 days into jury selection) Kim Gardner dismisses the charges, but vows to bring them back. Why?
- They could not find the photo at the center of the indictment.
- There was a search of the alleged phone, and there is no evidence of the photo.
- iCloud and Google were searched, and the alleged photo was not found
- No one was found to corroborate the existence of the alleged photo.
- There is no evidence that the alleged photo was transmitted.
Having failed in this attempt to remove Greitens, the Missouri Attorney General (Josh Hawley) referred a possible case to Mark Richardson, the Cole County Prosecutor. The basis of the case is the allegation that Greitens filed false documents with the Missouri Ethics Commission. The alleged wrongdoing is that Greitens used and or shared the TMC (The Mission Continues) donor list to solicit campaign contributions. If Greitens has done so, the use of a private list is an “In Kind” contribution to his campaign and should be reported as such.
May 18, 2018 – Cold County Prosecutor says, “no charge on Greitens” for the campaign finance report to the Missouri Ethics Commission.
May 21, 2018 – Judge appoints a special prosecutor jean Peters Baker, to decide whether to refile the invasion of privacy case against Greitens.
I used to believe “where there is smoke, there is fire” and often made judgments based on that belief. My thinking was – if the newspapers print a story, and stay on it long enough, then there must be something underneath it all.
Fundamentally, I still believe that. However, my perspective is different today than it was twenty and thirty years ago.
What’s underneath it? I don’t know. Let me be clear about that. However, the more I read the more I wonder if Eric Greitens simply was not “one of the guys” and he had to go.
Greitens goal: Stop Politics as Usual. The Governor supported the elimination of the “Low Income Housing Tax Credit” (LIHTC). Tax Credits promote investment in low income housing. Who benefits from this? Contractors and some investors. That is one powerful political group. However, the tax money saved from such a program can be redirected and used to better fund existing state services and to cut taxes.
Let me wrap this up. Today – May 29, 2018 – Governor Eric Greitens announced he had enough. He quit. He gave up under the onslaught of ongoing and continues attacks. He resigned effective 5 PM on Friday June 1, 2018.
By the way – a side note – do a search and see how the media is headlining this story.
Italy, the will of the people thwarted by the needs of the few outweighing the Will of the many.
Missouri, the Will of the people thwarted by the needs of the few outweighing the Will of the many.
The next time you read about “special interests” understand that they fund the entrenched civil servants and bendable politicians, to their own interests. Greitens made one serious mistake: He quit. The political nature of impeachment, would have put everyone on the record of what they support: is it the people, or is it the entrenched deep state?
So, do the reading, and decide for yourself.
